The word periodontal means “around the tooth”. Periodontal disease attacks the gums and the bone that support the teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of food debris, bacteria, and saliva. If plaque is not removed, it turns into calculus (tartar). When plaque and calculus are not removed, they begin to destroy the gums and bone. Periodontal disease is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums.
Four out of five people have periodontal disease and don’t know it! Most people are not aware of it because the disease is usually painless in the early stages.
Not only is it the number one reason for tooth loss, research suggests that there may be a link between periodontal disease and other diseases such as, stroke, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and increased risk during pregnancy. Researchers are determining if inflammation and bacteria associated with periodontal disease affects these systemic diseases and conditions. Smoking also increases the risk of periodontal disease.
Good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits can help reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease.

"Looking for an awesome dentist? STOP right here! I've been going to this dental office for 10 years and I can't fully express into words how much I love this dental office! I used to avoid going to the dentist because of the anxiety I would get. However, I've never felt that way at this dental office! His entire staff are genuine, good people and treat you like family. You can tell that they love their jobs and truly care. I had severe root canal pain during a holiday weekend not too long ago. Dr. Wernick and Laura left their New Year's Eve festivities to help/meet me at the office to help alleviate the pain I was having. The fact that he would be willing to go out of his way on a holiday to help make mine less painful, meant a lot!! That speaks volumes about their character! The office is beautiful and always perfectly clean. The tvs on the wall and ceiling at every chair, are my favorite feature! I'm so thankful a friend of mine referred me ..."
